December 1, 2012 (by Claude Brisson) - Professional photographer, Gord Weber was on the ice last season taking some shots for his website. The subject of the photo shoot was a bikini clad woman with the dogs. Really! Claude Brisson snapped a quick one of Big Al with the dogs.
February 11, 2012 (by Steve Barnett) - While waiting for the 2012 PIIFA Ice Fishing Derby to start Saturday morning, Steve Barnett looked out across the bay and snapped this great photo of a boy trying his best to help dad drill some holes!
January 30, 2012 (by Ronald Zinn) - Isabelle Escobar moved from Bolivia with her family just three years ago. While her father Rodrigo has always been the adventurous type and enjoys being outdoors, it was only natural that Isabelle would follow him for the love of the outdoors. On her very first day of ice fishing at Petrie Island, Isabelle made the trek out to the drop-off and participated in pulling in a two pound sauger and a 4.5 pound walleye. Not bad for a kid on her first day on the ice!
December 15, 2011 (by André Chartrand) - André Chartrand painted a nice scene of some ice fishing huts at Petrie Island. In the painting: Trevor the Newf's hut, Big Louis' hut and his own hut.
December 1, 2011 (Photo by Amber-Lee Sowa) - Amber-Lee Sowa sent in this fantastic photo of Petrie Island at Sunset at the end of the 2011 season.
March 1, 2011 (Photos by Francine Martin) - During the flurry of activity of the prize presentations after the PIIFA derby, we caught a beer thief red-handed! Check the carefull execution of this perfectly planned heist.
Photo #1: Big Louis spots the box of beer in front of Big Al's hut and decides he wants some. He stands back and waits patiently for the perfect moment. When Big Al turns to get more derby door prizes to give out, Louis goes in for the grab and starts filling his pockets with the Coors Lite.
Photo #2: Shows Big Louis doing his best to distract Big Al from anything beer related but the photo clearly shows the eveidence in his pocket. Click on the photo to enlarge for a better view.
February 18, 2011 - Amber-Lee Sowa sent us this great photo of a stunningly beautiful mystery woman and her walleye. It was a totally random photo taken by Amber-Lee a few weeks ago on the ice at Petrie Island. We don't know who the Woman is or what she was doing in the photo. Was she posing for the photo? Was she apologizing to the fish for her catching it or just mesmerized because she finally caught one. Such beauty and great photography are worthy of a magazine cover. Thank you Amber-Lee for the great photo and… lady in the photo? We want to know who you are… just to thank you for brightening everyone's day.
January 24, 2011 (Photo by Brian Shelley) - Brian Shelley is a great fisherman but his photography is even better. Using his Olympus 850SW, Brian took a bunch of really nice close-ups of crappies he caught last week-end on Baitshop Bay. Check out more of Brian's great close-up crappie photos in the 2010-2011 Angler's Gallery.
January 11, 2011 (Photo by Billy Hum) - An interesting self pic from Billy Hum taken a few weeks ago while the ice was still thin. Using his Olympus 6020 digital all-weather cam he took this interesting reverse shot of what a Petrie Island fish might see from an ice hole.
December 1, 2010 (Photo by Ronald Zinn) - Over the years, we have lost many ice fishing friends and acquaintances. Late last season, our friend Jocelyn "PeeWee" Belanger died in a place where we are supposed to be having fun. This is my last photo of PeeWee.
February 27, 2010 (Photo by Ronald Zinn) - Waiting for their ice hut to be pulled off the ice on the last day of the 2010 ice fishing season, you can almost read the minds of Bean and Marc, "Okay, the ice fishing season is over, so what do we do now?"
January 21, 2010 (Photo by Ronald Zinn) - I have been ice fishing at Petrie Island for years but never got to experience fishing at the Baitshop Bay drop-off... until last week-end. The drop-off is the area where Baitshop Bay "drops-off" into the Ottawa River. The water is much deeper there and the ice thickness is very erratic due the flow of the Ottawa River. In the hour that I was there, I saw Mike, Chris, Steve, Suzanna and others catch at least a dozen nice walleyes.
February 20, 2009 (Photo by Yves Grandmaitre) - We've always wanted a photo like this. Oziles' owner, Yves Grandmaitre recently took a trip to the top of Petrie's Landing Condominiums for this fantastic view of Baitshop Bay during the peak of the 2009 ice fishing season. Petrie's Landing Condominiums' first tower is presently under construction on the shore of Baitshop Bay with more towers in the planning phase. Click on the photo to view a larger version.
February 5, 2009 (Photo by Allan Macintyre) - Marshall Elliott waiting for the big one on opening day 2009 at Petrie Island. Did Marshall know that there was a nice northern pike sniffing his bait while he was waiting? Nope. Marshall didn't catch this one, but maybe someone else did. Check out our 2008-09 Angler's Gallery, to see if someone else caught that pike.
December 20, 2008 (Photo by Graeme Gower) - Ya gotta feel for Graeme... this is really bad!
March 15, 2008 (Photo by Ronald Zinn) - If we can find any humour in the aftermath of the big storm of 2008 and digging out of our ice huts, this is it! Ken Cross and Al Macintyre worked hard to jack up and install new skis under Al's hut in preparation for the last day of ice hut removal. They spent the better part of March 14 preparing for the big moment, but will always be considered as plumbing apprentices, just because of the classic pose.
February 27, 2008 (Photo by Nurhan Papucciyan) - We hear stories every season about a fish being caught that was too big to get through the hole. R.K Ronald caught this monster yellow perch at the Baitshop Bay drop-off on Friday, February 15, 2008. RKR fought this fish for more than 30 minutes while his friends worked hard to enlarge the hole and in the end, he got his fish! The fish weighed in 62.5 pounds which is a Canadian record for a perch.
February 20, 2008 (Photo by Erica Zinn) - Sixteen year-old Michele Zinn caught a dandy pike in Baitshop Bay last week-end. Photos taken by her twin sister Erica show the spectacular head of this beautiful female pike and the quick live release.
January 31, 2008 (Photo by Luc Pasquin) - Luc Pasquin organized a sleepover in his ice hut with his kids one evening early in 2008. His oldest, Jeremy left the car window open after retrieving some gear and during the night it snowed. Pictured is the what Luc and Jeremy found the next morning. He told us that it took more than 5 hours to thaw out the car.
December 3, 2007 (Sent in by Ray Cartier) - Whew! What were these guys thinking? Ray Cartier emailed us this photo of two hosers who probably fell asleep on the ice and woke up in April! Ray didn't mention where the photo was taken, but we don't think it was at Petrie Island.
February 12, 2007 - On those cold days on the ice at Petrie Island, you just have to wonder if it's really that cold. This is an photo of Niagara Falls taken in 1911 when the falls almost froze completely. Makes you wonder just how cold and how long it was that cold to freeze solid the powerful water pressure of the river and the falling water.
December 26, 2006 - Holy Crap! This is a fish to remember! This monster sturgeon was caught in May 2006 in Kincardine Harbour on the southeast shores of Lake Huron. It weighed over 1000 pounds and was over 11 feet long with a 56 inch girth! There is not much chance of catching this guy around here, but his brother might be close by, so just a warning: make your holes just a little larger this season.
February 18, 2006 - Squint your eyes a little and maybe cock your head a bit. At first sight you might think the photo below is a crop circle or something. Some might think it could be the lay-out for a British garden maze or crazier still, a close-up of fire ants in formation. It's actually an aerial photo of a 1955 ice fishing derby on White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
