The PIIFA Photo of The Week Archive
Some of the best photos from our front page PHOTO OF THE WEEK. We can't put them all here, but this is a collection of some of the most memorable. If you have a photo that you think is worthy of being on the front page of our website, email it to us using the link at the bottom of the page. Click on any image for a larger view or to print.
February 14, 2021 - One of our fellow ice fishermen got that sinking feeling when his hut started to go down. It was a combination of too heavy and too soon and then it got locked in. After a few sleepless nights, lots of thinking and some help from his friends, the ice hut was cut out of the ice and moved back to shore.
February 2, 2021 - Marc Dakin and his kids catch a nice pike in Baitshop bay on January 19.
December 1, 2020 - We have seen several incarnations of the Bait Shop at Petrie Island. Back in 2006, the Bait Shop was known as Petrie Island Bait and Tackle. The long building was constructed by long-time bait shop owner, Claude Moreau and was actually three huts joined together.
January 28, 2020 - Christian Laurin's way of getting some air when his stove is too hot.
January 18, 2020 - Too much beer and a lively walleye took Rick Beaudoin by surprise. Luckily, the fish calmed down and we have a better photo of Rick and his walleye in the 2020 PIIFA Anglers Gallery.
February 16, 2019 - One of the highlights of the 2019 PIIFA Ice Fishing Derby at Petrie Island was the Plinko for CHEO fundraiser conceived and organized by derby organizer Rick Beaudoin. The game raised more than $1200.00 for CHEO.
January 19, 2019 - Richard Beaudoin took a perfect photo of a sun ring at Petrie Island. These beautiful rings can be seen around the moom or the sun in winter. Although not rare, they are a beautiful sight.
February 3, 2018 - Brian Little of Rockland caught this 12 pound pike on Saturday, February 3. Brian was in Oziles' hut rental #2 when he caught it.
December 28, 2017 - We always look forward to this. Every year, Claude Brisson makes a regulation size curling rink on the ice in Baitshop Bay. As you can see, the rink might be standard, the stones and brooms are definitely not! The Brissons are a friendly bunch, stop by the rink this season for a game or two!
February 18, 2017 - The Red Bull girls showed up at our 2017 derby to promote their brand and PIIFA President, Big Al Macintyre jumped at the opportunity for a photo op. Great photo but one question we were asking all day, "Were these girls old enough to drive that Red Bull car?" They said yes, but we're still not sure.
February 1, 2017 - It used to be Sylvain Perrier had the nicest hut on the ice. With the rustic looking barnwood exterior and the tasteful decoration inside, Sylvain's hut was the model ice hut. Then Louis Cloutier built his "Big Red Bear Den". Louis spent huge bucks on his hut and like Louis, it was larger than life. Last year, Snoop stepped in with his model hut. Snoop worked hard on his hut and it was something to see. Now Ben seems to be the top guy on the ice with a hut that could be featured in "Better Huts and Shanties". His hut is really a home away from home. Great work Ben!
January 6, 2017 - Nick Nolan of Rideau Ferry clicked this pic of a poor guy digging out his boat on New Years Day. The guy claimed he was too busy to do it in the fall. It took several hours but with help from Nick and a few onlookers he got his boat back to the ramp!
January 19, 2016 - A few members of PIIFA took advantage of a recent City of Ottawa auction and bought an old OC Transpo bus shelter. The former bus shelter has been converted to an ice hut and is now on the ice at Petrie Island.
January, 16, 2015 - We not sure of the details of this photo, only that it's a cool pic. Looking in the background, we see a 50's American car and trailer with people fishing nearby. It is obvious that the fisherman had a good day on this ice.
December 21, 2014 - The first real snowstorm of the season created an incredible illusion in a tree between the hut storage area and Baitshop Bay at Petrie Island. What looks like a polar bear cub resting in a tree was just the way the wet snow fell in the branches of the tree. This spectacle lasted just a few hours before the sun softened it and it fell from the tree. Thanks mother nature for this wonderful winter photo!
December 1, 2014 (by Ronald Zinn) - Just as the 2014 Orleans Santa's Parade of Lights is about to begin, Jim Watson, the Mayor of Ottawa stops by the PIIFA float for a photo with Wally the Walleye. Just as the photo was about to be taken, Big Al steps in for a great photo bomb with Wally and the Mayor. Nice one Al!
Renters of the PIIFA hut always seem to have a better time than most. Saturday was not different when Fernando Gonzalez from Ottawa and a group of his friends rented the PIIFA for the day. It was non-stop smiles from the time they arrived. Although the fish were not biting that day, they still had a great time. We'll post more photos from this happy group in the next few days.
February 18, 2014 (by Kyle Heaney) - The end result of a vandalized car after the Petrie Island derby on February 15. As the photographer put it: "The people that did this were obviously twenty-something drinkers.
February 7, 2014 (by Al Macintyre) - This photo was on the wall of Stephane Lanthier's hut which sank during the 2008-09 season. Amazingly the photo was retrieved several years later and is back in his hut.
January 18, 2014 (by Sylvain Michaud) - Nothing beats ice skating in the fresh air of an Ottawa Saturday afternoon. Residents of the ice fishing community of Baitship Bay enjoy some relaxed ice skating along with a game of pick-up hockey.
December 15, 2013 (by Rick Beaudoin) - Some probably get dismantled while others get put in storage for another year. Unlike others, PIIFA moves theirs to where retired giant fish floats are happiest: In the middle of Baitshop Bay! In less than a month, the float will be the center piece of our ice fishing village and over 125 ice fishing huts.
