What you need to know

Our 2020 ice fishing derby takes place on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Petrie Island, Ontario. The derby takes place on the ice in Baitshop Bay from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We remind everyone that this event is limited to the hut owners of Baitshop Bay, their invited guests and people who rent huts for the day from the Oziles Bait Shop and Marina.

On derby day, vehicle traffic in the ice fishing village will be restricted to hut owners, staff and individuals renting ice huts from Oziles. Guests and visitors are asked to park their vehicles on Trim Road or Jeanne d'Arc and walk down on to the ice.

Derby Prizes and Raffles

Our prize patrol has gathered donations from many businesses in the area, so even if you don't win a prize for catching a fish, you will at least have a good chance at winning something nice. Also look for raffles and draws, all in support of CHEO. We have a raffle for an ice auger courtesy of Canadian Tire in Rockland, or a Generator courtesy of Moto Gatineau, plus your chance to win our annual 50-50 draw.

Look for the 50-50 tickets being sold on the ice during the derby. The draw for the 50-50 prize will take place immediately after the derby and you must be present to win. Raffle tickets for the generator and auger will be available shortly and will be sold on the ice during the derby. You do not have to be present at the derby to win the auger or generator. Prize presentations and prize draws will take place on the ice immediately after the derby at 4:15 PM.

Dontations to the Orleans Food Bank

We encourage derby registrants and visitors to drop off canned and non-perishable food at the registration hut. All donations will be dropped off at the Orleans Food Bank to help underprivileged people in our area. The food bank provides, once a month, emergency food supplies for 3 to 4 days to low-income individuals and families within the Orleans East, Cumberland, Sarsfield, Vars, Navan and Carlsbad Springs communities.

Coleman oil heater

Oil Heaters Are All The Rage!

The norm for heating an ice hut at Petrie Island used to be the classic wood stove. There was nothing better than warming yourself with a roaring fire in your ice hut. Throw a log or two on the fire every hour and you’re good to go!

About 15 years ago, a few of us experimented with vintage oil heaters and never looked back. Back before most of us were born many rural homes used them for heating. At the time they were considered a "Step Up" from wood stoves. They can burn any type of oil but the most common and cheapest is diesel fuel from the gas station.

An oil heater in an ice hut reduces the need to feed the fire every hour, so no longer the need to buy and store expensive firewood at your hut. For people sleeping overnight, there is no longer the need to get up in the middle of the night to feed the fire. With an oil heater, all you need to do is start it and your hut will be toasty warm in less than 30 minutes! They provide constant heat for up to 48 hours or more, depending on the size of the tank.

If you are considering switching to an oil heater, the conversion is very easy because the chimney setup is exactly the same as a wood stove. Oil heaters are commonly found on kijiji. The most common brand and model was manufactured by Coleman in the 1940s and 1950s. They are quite often “barn finds”, you know… someone finds one of these while clearing out an old barn. They are not always available in our area because our fishermen have exhausted the market for these but keep looking, you will find one!

:If you are unsure about converting to an oil heater, check out the huts that already have them. We know you will want one! If you already have an oil heater and have questions about maintenance, we have the owner’s manual for a Coleman model 871. Oil heaters are very simple, so the manual pretty well applies to them all. Looking for a hard copy of the manual? Ask Ron, next time you see him on the ice.
