A Spectacular View of the 2019 Ice Fishing Village
We love it when we get photos like this. Eric Theriault, owner of the Oziles Marina and Bait Shop recently went to the penthouse of the Petrie's Landing Condominiums for this great photo of the 2019 ice fishing village in Baitshop Bay at Petrie Island.
The 2019 PIIFA Derby: A Record Breaking Derby in Support of CHEO
This year's derby raised $6,355.00 for The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
In the past few years, we have been blessed with perfect weather for our annual ice fishing derby at Petrie Island and this year was no different. The weather was bright and sunny with a temperature of -5c. As with all previous PIIFA derbies, organizers outdid themselves by making it bigger and better than all previous years with 192 participants and many more sponsors. The derby raised a record $6,355.00 which will be given to The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) at their annual telethon in June.
Months of planning and legwork went into securing prize donations from both small and large businesses in the Ottawa area and we thank Dan, Mike Dubois and Anne Dumas for their efforts.
This years organizers, The Beaudoin-Tessier Family, found new ways to make even more money for CHEO. They were raffles for a Rapala ice auger and a Yamaha Generator, plus the "Plinko for CHEO" game which was hugely popular and raised well over $1,000.00 towards the final total.
A huge THANK YOU to all the volunteers who helped make this event possible. They include this years organizers, Richard Beaudoin, Christine Beaudoin, Fionna Beaudoin and Brianna Beaudoin. Stéphane Lanthier, our sound technician. Mathieu Gauthier, Registration and weigh-in. Dan, Michel Dubois and Anne Dumas, the prize people. Big Al Macintyre, the PIIFA President. Ronald Zinn, printing, promotion and the website. Cheers to all the others who worked hard in the background including Natalie Cloutier, Anne Dumas, Dan Michaud and Sylvain Michaud. The Complete story and photos

The 2019 Ice Hut Archive
If you're not a regular to the Petrie Island Ice Village or you are but do not venture far from your hut, the 2019 Ice Hut Archive is here! We have photographed many of the ice huts of Baitshop Bay.
Back in the early years of PIIFA, most huts and shacks were made with plywood, clapboard and whatever else people could find to construct a shelter. In recent years, building an ice hut at Petrie Island has turned in to kind of a silent competition to see who can construct the best hut. Many of the newer huts could be one room condos or mini-cottages with all the features. Most have electricity powered by a generator, solar power, wind power or power packs. Many have full kitchens, bathrooms and sleeping areas! We have some spectacular huts around here which we think are quite unique to anywhere else!
In the first year of our Ice Hut Photo Archive back in 2012, most people did not have a name for their hut or simply called it "My ice shack" or "My ice hut". With the latest version of the ice hut archive, many people have given a name to their hut. Some of the most best and unusual names this year? The Salmon Dream, The Tragically Hut, The Petrie Island Bier Haus and The Llama Lounge.
We did our best to photograph as many ice huts as we could but it is next to impossible to get them all. If somehow we missed yours and you want a photo of your hut in the archive, take a photo and send it to us.The 2019 Ice Hut Archive

The Guy We Called Bidou
We get a lot of special people on the ice each season at Petrie Island. Bidou was one of those special characters that made everyone laugh. Everything about the guy brought a smile to everyone's face whether it was his unique voice, his happy demeanor or just the "no-pressure" attitude. Sadly, this guy disappeared after the 2005 season and we never saw him again. Did he stop ice fishing? Did he move to another location? Did someone piss him off? Where is he? Bidou, we miss you... come back to Petrie Island!

Plinko for CHEO!
One of the highlights of the 2019 PIIFA Ice Fishing Derby at Petrie Island was the Plinko for CHEO fundraiser conceived and organized by derby organizer Rick Beaudoin. The game raised more than $1200.00 for CHEO and winners won some great prizes including a tool kit, a week-end getaway, an ice auger and more.
