Caution at Petrie Island

Stay safe on the ice

With the warm conditions caused by the 2016 El Nino, the red flag is now posted in Baitshop Bay. Ramps to the ice are now closed to all vehicle traffic. Mixed weather conditions over the past few days have caused unsafe ice. More of the same is forecast for the next few days with a cool down towards the week-end.

Ramps to Baitshop Bay could open to limited vehicle traffic by the week-end. If you are visiting Petrie Island in the next few days and decide to head out on the ice, leave your car at the Baitshop and walk out.

Gearing up for Derby Week-end

The annual PIIFA Ice Fishing derby will take place on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Petrie Island. It will take place from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the area of Baitshop Bay. The derby is open to all hut owners of Baitshop Bay and their guests. The derby coincides with the winter version of Ontario's Family Fishing Week-end. This is a great time to fish in Ontario without having to buy a fishing permit.

The 2016 PIIFA ice fishing derby - Ottawa

Our derby has proven to be popular in past years with tons of fun and prizes. There will be prizes for winners of various fish categories in the derby and a 50-50 draw with tickets sold during the event. As always, the PIIFA derby is non-profit event and we will be giving all profits raised in the derby to CHEO at their annual spring telethon.

Don't leave when the derby is over! The Oziles Baitshop is putting on a fireworks show after it gets dark!

With all derbies organized on the ice at Petrie Island, Big Al is collecting Canadian Tire money to give as one of our many door prizes. Check your glove box, desk drawers and tool box for Canadian Tire Money and stop by Big Al's hut and give him what you got!

The rules are the same as last year with prizes for the largest fish by weight; the largest panfish by weight; and the smallest legally caught fish. Registration for the event is $25.00 for adults and $10.00 for kids aged 16 and under. Save $5.00 if you register before derby day!

We have lined up a few sponsors for prize donations but are looking for more. If you or your company would like to donate, please contact Big Al or Rick Beaudoin on the ice or send us an email. It's all for a good cause!

Remember, the derby is limited to the ice hut owners of Petrie Island and their guests. As it is Family Fishing week-end, your guests do not require an Outdoors Card or fishing permit to participate.

The beginning of another season at Petrie Island

The 2016 ice fishing season has begun and few huts are already on the ice.

Flooding in the area remains an issue due to the ice buildup downriver at the Carrilon dam. The issue seems have been resolved and the water level has gone down somewhat.

Ice on 2016 at Petrie Island

While it might seem safe, there will still be danger due ice pockets under the ice. The receding water will create two layers of ice especially near shore. Seasoned ice fishermen tell us that the ice in the bay is totally safe and will actually become stronger as the high water recedes.

While you might see huts and cars on the ice early in the 2016 season, the ice is still thin near shore and the yellow caution flag is still posted. The ice road in Baitshop Bay is currently limited to ice hut owners only. Visitors are asked to park their vehicles on Trim Road and walk down to the village.
