The 2015 Oziles' Ice Fishing Derby
It was a cold and blustery day but Saturday, February 7 saw more than 150 participants for the 2015 version of The Oziles' Ice Fishing Derby at Petrie Island. It was a fun day for all but more importantly, the derby raised much needed money for Blue Fish Canada and The CHEO Foundation.
In all, there were more than 70 fish were caught by derby participants and the largest fish caught was an 8.9 pound Northern Pike. All but one fish were released live. It's not clear who won prizes in derby categories of largest fish, largest panfish and smallest legal fish. Still everyone who participated in the derby were happy with the handouts and participation prizes from event sponsors. They include Orleans Boat World, EastPenn, Piranha Propellers, Marathon Drilling, Orleans Bowling, Jonny Canuck's, Charlie's Baits, KTL Canada, Darcy Mcgee's, Liftow, Toppers Pizza, Sheet Metal Workers Local 47, Dilfo Mechanical, Maurice Yelle, Battlefield Rentals and PIIFA.
A big thanks to the Orleans Scouts who made and sold hotdogs to all the hungry participants. Thanks also to Ottawa's The New Hot 89.9 for showing up and playing tunes all day!
Ontario Family Fishing Week-end
The 2015 winter version of Ontario Family Fishing week-end takes place February 14 to 16. It is province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without purchasing the fishing version outdoors card. What a great time to introduce kids or friends to what ice fishing is all about.
While no fishing permit or Outdoors card are needed for the week-end, fishermen and potential fishermen are reminded that Ontario fishing regulations are still in effect. Check out posted fishing limits for the Ottawa River or download complete regulations from the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources) website. For complete information on Ontario Family Fishing Week-end, check out the Ontario Family Fishing Week-end website. For ice fishing equipment rentals or to rent your very own ice shack at Petrie Island, call the Oziles' baitshop at 613-841-0778 or visit the Oziles Website.

The most unique ice shack of 2015
Steph and Claude's hut was voted the most unique ice shack of 2015 at Petrie Island. Their shack is a converted travel trailer on wheels which they they painted with a huge Canadian Flag. Nice shack but it doesn't end there. Steph and Claude have made a full sized curling rink on the ice beside their shack. What a unique idea! Congrats you two for such a nice and unique ice shack!
