The 2011 Santa's Parade of Lights - Orleans
The 2012 Orleans Santa's Parade of Lights

For the first time, PIIFA will have a float in the Orleans Santa's Parade of Lights on Saturday, November 24, 2012. The float will feature the ice hut of Sylvain Perrier and Ann Guay. Those familiar to the ice fishing community of Petrie Island continually say that Sylvain and Anne have one of the nicest huts on the ice.

Yves Grandmaitre, owner of Oziles Marina & Tackle has generously agreed to be our partner in the parade and in float preparation. Oziles will provide the truck and trailer and PIIFA members will build the float and provide manpower on parade day.

It will be a fun evening for kids and their families in the Ottawa area but it's also for a good cause. The Ottawa Fire Service and Ottawa Police will be collecting gifts and donations along the parade route for the less fortunate.

Parade organizers expect up to 100,000 people out for the parade which begins at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24th. The parade starts near the intersection of Youville and St-Joseph in Orleans and heads east past Place d'Orleans finishing up just before 10th Line Road.

Ice fishing season preparation
Ice Hut Preparation Before the Season Begins

All huts stored at Petrie Island should be put up on blocks before the ground freezes. This facilitates moving the huts at the beginning of the ice fishing season.

When the ice in the Bay reaches a minimum of 30 centimetres, Oziles will start hauling huts out on the ice. Depending on the weather, this usually begins in late December or sometime in January.

  • -- Your hut storage fees must be paid in full before the boys from Oziles will even think about hauling your hut on to the ice.

  • -- Contact Oziles at 613-841-0778 to make arrangements to get your hut hauled on the ice.

CBC Ottawa Morning visits Petrie

Just before last year's derby, Christine Maki from CBC Ottawa Morning dropped by Petrie Island to get a first-hand look at our ice fishing community and the upcoming derby. She got the complete tour with Big Al and visits with The Two Bobs. The interview took place several days before the derby and aired on Friday, February 10, 2012.

The interview was in the archives of CBC Ottawa Morning but has since been discontinued.
