2009 Ice fishing season
Let The Fishing Begin!

The 2009 season officially began Saturday, January 3, 2009 with more than 35 huts on the ice by late Saturday. At least 10 more were moved on the ice by the end of Sunday bringing the total amount of huts on the ice to around 50. This is the earliest start to a season that we have seen in many years. The ice is next to perfect with what some would call black. It's good solid ice, perfect for ice fishing and will only get better as the season goes on. With the long range weather forecast predicting perfect weather for ice fishing, it should be a great season.

The fish were few and far between on Saturday, but a few medium size pike were caught by a few with some nice walleyes caught by guys at the drop-off.

That photo was emailed by Jeff Pritchard of Orleans who caught a few of those early season walleyes. For more early season photos from ice fishing at Petrie Island, check out our 2009 Angler's Gallery.

Early Season Observations

-- Opening day observations include seeing many stored ice huts damaged from fallen trees and wind from the weird autumn weather. Owners of these huts will not be able to repair these things and will have to buy or build a new hut.

New Bait shop

-- Oziles has a great new bait shop. It is in a large new trailer parked right beside the old bait shop. It looks like the new tackle shop is more than double the size of the old one. A quick look inside shows a large selection of tackle and other fishing equipment with the usual bait, minnows and worms. Also, they now have a huge selection of drinks and snacks for all the hungry fishermen. Great goin' Oziles!

-- Still on Oziles, it seems the boys that work at Oziles are doing a great job at maintaining the ramps on to the ice. Let's hope they keep up the good work through-out the entire season!

-- Many people have asked if the new entrance to the ice will compromise security to their ice huts as visitors will no longer have to pass security cams as they enter on the ice on Baitshop Bay.

-- After the big storm at last season's ending, the condition and maintenance of ice roads is on everyone's minds for this season. Yves has assured us that he has an ice groomer to take care of the ice roads and it will be in tip-top shape when the season begins.

The 2009 Petrie Island Derby

Yves Grandmaitre, owner of Oziles recently told us that the 2009 Petrie Island Ice Fishing Derby will be held on February 15, 2009, Unlike other years when the annual derby was held on or near the last week-end of the ice fishing season. Yves explained that this year's derby was moved ahead a few weeks to coincide with winter Ontario Family Fishing Week-end, where all Canadian residents can enjoy the fun of fishing in Ontario without buying a fishing permit.

Keep checking this website for updates and information on the derby

Hut Registration sign
Ice Hut Registration

All ice fishing huts at Petrie Island must be registered with the local Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources office and the registration number must be clearly visible on your hut. Your registration numbers must be at least 6.3 cm (2.5 in.) in height and clearly displayed on the outside of the hut. Registration is necessary for any type of hut except for tents made of cloth or synthetic fabric that has a base area of two square metres (21.5 square feet) or less when erected.

For the list of local offices where you can register your ice hut, go to The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources website.

Ontario Outdoors Card
Fishing Permits and Outdoors Cards

Everyone fishing in Ontario must have a valid fishing permit and an Outdoors Card. An Outdoors Card is a plastic, wallet-sized, identification card to which your Ontario fishing licence tag is affixed. It acts as a durable carrier for your licence tag for three calendar years. Most Canadian residents need an Ontario-issued Outdoors Card and fishing licence tag to fish in Ontario if they are at least 18 years old but have not reached their 65th birthday.

Although the cards are no longer sold at the Oziles Tackle Shop, they can be purchased at the Canadian Tire on Innes Road. Make sure that all people in your hut have a valid Outdoors card and fishing permit as the Game Wardens make regular visits to Petrie Island.
